Bactiguard supports the World Sepsis Day

Sepsis is a global health crisis and every 3-4 seconds someone dies of sepsis. The World Sepsis Day is held on September 13th every year and is an opportunity for people across the world to raise awareness and unite in the fight against sepsis. In our mission to prevent hospital acquired infections and save lives, Bactiguards is one of the main sponsors of the event.

Sepsis is the number one cause of preventable death worldwide. It is the life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to infection results in organ dysfunction or failure. In its early stages, sepsis is often confused with other conditions which delays diagnosis and adequate treatment, quickly leading to multi-system organ failure, and, ultimately, death.

Sepsis is a global health crisis. It affects 27 to 30 million people every year, whereof as many as 7 to 9 million die – one death every 3.5 seconds. Depending on country, mortality varies between 15 and more than 50 %. Many surviving patients suffer from the consequences of sepsis for the rest of their lives.

To be able to treat sepsis it needs to be diagnosed as soon as possible.
The following symptoms may indicate sepsis:

  • Slurred speech or confusion
  • Extreme shivering or muscle pain, fever
  • Passing no urine all day
  • Severe breathlessness
  • It feels like you’re going to die
  • Skin mottled or discoloured

Most types of microorganisms can cause sepsis, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. An estimated 50 % of all cases of sepsis can be attributed to healthcare associated infections (HAI).1 Consequently, preventing HAI is imperative in reducing the occurrence of sepsis. Bactiguard save lives by developing and supplying infection protection solutions which reduce the risk of healthcare associated infections that may develop into sepsis.

The best way to prevent sepsis is to prevent infection in the first place.
